Xi Commemorates Karl Marx's 200th Birth Anniversary

President Xi Jinping attended a grand gathering to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx on Friday morning.
This year also marks the 170th anniversary of the publication of the Communist Manifesto, one of the most prominent works of Karl Marx. The political pamphlet marks the birth of Marxism, which later became one of the founding philosophies in modern China.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, delivers a speech at the gathering in the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Only Socialism with Chinese Characteristics Can Develop China
The Communist Party of China combines the basic principles of Marxism with the realities of new China and has brought historical achievements, as well as deep and fundamental historical changes to the country, Xi said.
He noted that the achievements have proven that only by adhering to and developing socialism with Chinese characteristics can we achieve the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
The founding of the CPC was guided by Marxism, while the Party holds a great responsibility towards the rejuvenation of the nation and leading the Chinese people to create a miracle of human beings, Xi said.
Marxism not only profoundly changed the world, but also profoundly changed China, Xi noted, adding that as a faithful believer and steadfast practitioner of Marxism, the CPC is making persistent efforts to uphold and develop Marxism.
Marx's Theory Still Shines with Truth
Two centuries on, despite huge and profound changes in human society, the name of Karl Marx is still respected all over the world and his theory still shines with the brilliant light of truth, Xi said.
Xi said Marx is the "teacher of revolution for the proletariat and working people all over the world, the main founder of Marxism, creator of Marxist parties, pathfinder for international communism and the greatest thinker of modern times."
"Today, we hold this grand gathering with great veneration to mark the 200th anniversary of Marx's birth, to remember his great character and historic deeds and to review his noble spirit and brilliant thoughts," Xi said at the event.
With noble ideals and no fear of difficulties and adversities, throughout his lifetime, Marx devoted himself to perseverantly striving for the liberation of humanity, scaling the peak of thoughts in his pursuit of truth, and the unremitting fight to overturn the old world and establish a new one, according to Xi.
Marx is not only a great figure who shouldered the weight of the world, but also an ordinary person with passion for life, who was sincere and true to friendship, Xi said.
The most valuable and influential spiritual asset that Marx left to us is the scientific theory named after him - Marxism. Like a spectacular sunrise, the theory illuminated the path of humanity's exploration of the law of history, and humanity's search for their own liberation, Xi said.
He also highlighted that Marxism is a constantly developing theory and always stands at the forefront of the times.
"Marxism is the theory of people, the theory of practice, and is the open theoretical system," Xi added.
